Mobbing

What Is Mobbing At The Workplace?

Mobbing is a term used to describe a variety of behaviors in the workplace that amount to emotional abuse by workers of a fellow employee or employees. The term is used when a group of workers rather than a single worker engages in this hostile behavior, collectively making life difficult for someone on the job in a concerted fashion. The mobbing actors can be colleagues, superiors or subordinates, and this behavior can affect workers in businesses of all sizes, including at smaller companies. the methods workers utilize to mob a co-worker range from the brutally direct to the surreptitiously indirect. These include covert actions such as spreading a rumor about a worker or orchestrating the isolation of a worker in the office, working outside of the worker's sight to make life difficult for him. Or it can encompass more open, confrontational behavior, such as belittling, bullying and humiliating. The common thread is the maliciousness of the acts, and the sense of harassment it imparts on the victim. The result is a kind of emotional and psychological terrorism, according to a study on the topic published in the International Journal of Business and Social Science.

Emotional Impact

Mobbing can have a drastic effect on the morale and work performance of victims, leading them to show reduced enthusiasm for their work and diverting their focus from daily tasks. It also can diminish their likeliness to seek help from colleagues for difficult tasks because of an intense sense of isolation from them and distrust of their intentions. Ultimately, mobbing can cause such anxiety and discomfort that a worker will decide to leave for a post elsewhere. This can be particularly true when management does not emerge to address the mobbing incidents and allows them to continue and to grow, giving the tormentors the impression that the behavior in question is acceptable and can continue.

Physical Impact

Mobbing does not include collective physical abuse of a worker. Instead, it's largely focused on the victim's inner life. However, mobbing can take such an emotional toll on its victims that it ultimately can have a physical impact on them, creating stress and its related outcomes. Among those possible outcomes are headaches, gastrointestinal ailments and high blood pressure. Also, the pervasive pressure that mobbing provokes in victims makes it difficult for them to relax at work or away from the job and that can lead to exhaustion.
